Up for consideration is a beautiful hand-beaded and hand-sewn hair clip which is a wonderful example of Victorian mourning wear. When a woman was in mourning after the loss of a loved one, she would dress from head to toe in appropriate mourning attire: dresses, hats, jewelry, hair combs and clips, etc. In fact, mourning attire became fashionable in and of itself in the latter part of the 1800s, and some women chose to wear their black attire and accessories beyond the duration of the standard mourning period.

This clip has beautifully arranged long and round black glass beads. It is an interesting design, and looking at it now it kind of looks like an eye. The back side has hand-stitched black fabric and a simple clip which is secured by metal bands that have been sewn into the the fabric. This really is a nice example of Victorian mourning wear. It is in excellent condition with no flaws to note.
