Description

The listing, Very detailed Julian II Fel Temp Roman Coin 355-60ad ae3 as prince has ended.

Julian II was emperor from 361-3. This was minted before that, the nob c as well as the bare head denotes that he was a prince, not the emperor

He was the last non Christian emperor of the Roman Empire, and led many successful campaigns until mortally wounded in battle in 363. He was a complex yet learned man

Unfortunately this is chipped, missing part of the flan, the break has patina so was done in ancient times. Not all that uncommon. It's either ric8 sirmium 74 or 76. The first two letters in the exergue is missing, differentiating the two

This has a beautiful dark green patina, and I left a light sand on it as contrast. Nicely detailed, centered and struck

The fel temp reparatio basically means good times are returning, which really wasn't the truth. The empire was divided into 3 parts, and borders were being overrun by "barbarians" daily

Fel temps show a Roman soldier (guy on right) spearing a fallen barbarian horseman. This one, the barbarian is reaching towards the Roman. Other types have him clutching the horse. Even with the chip, this is a very nice coin indeed

Oops should say this type of fel temp, there were 3? Other varieties. One had the emperor on a boat, other one had Romans taking captives and burning a hut... Pretty sure there was one more type. Not scenes we normally see on coins lol
