The listing, Larger ae2/3 Gratian Roman Coin 375-383 ad 100% real has ended.
Unlike some widows mites listed, this is 100% real and authentic, guaranteed!
Gratian, son of Valentinian, was emperor from 375-383
His claim to fame was being the last emperor to successfully cross the Rhine river and defeat a tribe of Germanic barbarians
This is RIC IX Thessalonica 37a
This was struck on a cold planchet so some details are off flan, though it is decently centered for this era. If a planchet is too cold, it won't expand as much compared to being hot, when it is struck
This is 22mm and 5.3g, larger than most coins of the era
All info will be on the 2x2
The exergue, mintmark, is off flan. But there's a delta in right field, below and to the right of the victory in gratians hand. This automatically tells us it's from Thessalonica, it's the only option. So the attribution is correct, even without the exergue. Dane's (Helveticas) spread sheets are a god send. If you get into Romans, there is probably a direct link on wildwinds.com
She is currently running wild winds, the premier partial legend or even type search engine.
The reverse shows Gratian holding a victory, and also raising a kneeling woman
Dark green patina. Decent details for being struck on a cold planchet
The wheat is for size comparison, and as always, is included
Thank you
