Actually, they were never free! You got a $10 or $20 off coupon for models that were never intended to be sold in stores for any length of time.

They were all crap. Some more than others. I was able to get several, since most of my family used cable. Out of the four or so I got, only 1 of them was programmable, meaning that you could set it to switch on, off, or channels at specific times. Unfortunately, it had the worst channel guide, cutting off show titles, and cutting off show descriptions mid wo

It was also the least intuitive.

On the other hand, the easier to work with versions had very little else to recommend them.

I eventually came to realize that all these problems, though disguised to look like poor design, rushed implementation, and shoddy workmanship. All these problems were DEDIGNED INTO the receivers! Why? Well to drive sales of the non-subsidized ones, of course!

I came to understand that there was a set of problems from which it seemed that all of those subsidized relievers had to have 3 or 4. The idea is that these "problems" would irritate people into buying "better" ( newer/more expensive) ones.

Did you ever notice how NOT ONE SINGLE recognizable brand name A/V manufacturer was willing to put their names on even ONE.

You could have programmability, ease of use, good instructions, but not more than one each one.
