Equipped with superior fighting skills, King Leonidas I led the Spartan warriors into battle against Xerxes I and his massive Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. Composed of roughly 300 Spartans, 400 Thebans and 700 Thespians, the Spartan army blocked the pass of Thermopylae, as the Persians were invading Greece. The vastly outnumbered Spartans withstood for three days before ultimately falling in defeat to over 100,000 Persian warriors.
Prior to the battle, the Persians demanded that the Spartans lay down their weapons and surrender. King Leonidas responded defiantly in Greek, “Molon Labe!” The phrase means “come and take.” The king’s exclamation has inspired thousands in the centuries since — including us.
