The listing, 1800's Clay Tavern Pipe has ended.
Tobacco was a luxury staple among our forefathers. Long before cigarettes became a standard, the clay pipe was enjoyed by young and old alike. Many started out in excess of a foot long and as they were smoked and the mouth section became too moist and soft it would be broken off. Many 17th-19th century sites will have fragments of these pipes (see my other auction). Because they are a part of many historical period sites and their evolution has been well documented through the centuries, these pipe stems allow archaeologist to date historic sites quite accurately. This particular pipe with bowl in tact (much rarer than finding the stems alone) was recovered by myself from a river bank near an old Mill site here in Connecticut.
