I'm new to collecting. What about this date makes it a key date?

The best coin to get when it comes to Indian Head pennys is the 1877, Other than that super rare coin, the dates 1866-1878 are the "Key" dates in this series, other than dies and misprints, 1876 is a very good date to have in your collection especially just starting out. If that wasnt helpful enough let me know and ill clear anything up for you. Thanks for looking and have a wonderful day.

My understanding of a "key" date is when a coin design or type metal is changed. ex. change from copper to zinc or from wheat back to lincoln memorial, etc. Am I understanding it right?

No I am sorry but you have it wrong, a Key date is a date that is rare and hard to get, If you google any type of coin such as barber dime or Indian head penny it will show you that in the case of the barber dime the 1894s is the super rarity and so on.. I hope this helps.
