Hand held GPS for hiking or car buy Garmin, the leader in GPS technology. Works great.!! Has one problem,,The internal memory battery is bad so the memory is lost when you change the regular batteries. (Unless your real fast LOL) Uses 4 AA batteries. Has the cord with car power and computer interface. comes with case. Most instructions are in the unit, but a user manual can be downloaded for free here:

So when it gives you coordinates and directions, does it tell you to turn some direction in a certain number of miles (or something like that)? I don't know anything about these, but I think I need one.

It has an arrow along with a compass. it will give you distance also.Or you can track your destination
But it sounds like your need a newer type unit with picture maps and talking directions. This is an older unit,before talking ones..

Not really, I doesn't show roads and maps. It's mainly coordinates and direction.

I feel stupid having to ask, but what do you mean by "the memory is lost". To clarify, I am looking for a small GPS for my children to use when Geocaching, so if it has new batteries in it and I load the GPS cords for a cache, it will remember them right? But if the batteries die then I will have to reload them after i change it. Am I understanding this correctly.

The only thing it seems to lose is it's orientation as to where the unit actually is.
It has to go through the county, and state set up again and takes about 15 min. to recognize it self. I had in a drawer for 8 months, with the batteries out.
Put new batteries in it, and still had my cords and info I had put in it.

Here is some info I found and a link to help answer any other questions:
Note: Never store the GPS 38 without batteries. A built-in capacitor will save data
while you are changing the batteries, but only for a limited period of time ( a few
hours). If you’re storing the unit for an extended period of time, put in a fresh set of
alkaline or lithium batteries. Storing the unit with Ni.Cad batteries may result in
data loss due to the self-discharge characteristics of Ni.Cad batteries
Note: The GPS 38 uses 4 AA batteries to provide up to 12 hours of operation in
normal mode and up to 20 hours of operation in battery saver mode using alkaline
batteries. The batteries must be new and properly installed. It is essential to bring
an extra set of batteries during field surveys.

The only question I really have is this... Does Garmin still update the maps for this unit? I have a Garmin unit but the maps are not updated any longer and so when new roads are built where I live they aren't programed in because of that. I'll be watching!! :o)

There are no pre- loaded maps in this unit. I goes by coordinates.
You can get up-dates on your unit still. Except they cost after the first free one.
Just go to Garmin.com..
