Hollyhocks will keep growning from seeds that fall to the actual plants every year. I read that you cut the stalks to about an inch higher than the ground and mulch or put straw over them and they will regrow. I just cut them off a couple of inches from the ground and wait till it is near the first time snow, then I cover them with the mulch or straw, whatever I have at the time, as it snows for a good 3-5 months here. They come back and so does my friends.

I meant my friends that have hollyhocks in their yards, their hollyhocks come back each year also.
