Description

The listing, Prickly Pear Cactus has ended.

Perfect xeriscape plant. Fairly carefree once established. This one was a native of the Colorado Springs area when I liberated the parent plant from a development area in the foothills some years ago. I can send out a cactus pad (which will be shriveled somewhat due to the time of year), one of this year's still-pink fruit or a dried pod with seed. Your choice. FYI: I am in Zone 5.

I am not familiar with the purple one. Do you mean the fruit or the pad? I know people consume both. :)

Common Names of the purple one are: Santa Rita Pricklypear, Santa Rita Prickly Pear, Purple Prickly-pear. And yes I mean can you eat both the pad and the fruit like you can with the purple?

The fruit is full of seeds, so is not really that good to just eat. But people do use it to make jelly and drinks.

can they be grown inside on the east coast?

I suppose, but this plant likes to spread. It should grow outside as well. We get below zero here, so it's hardy.
