How to grow Early Scarlet Globe Radishes. #1
Zone 5-14.
Cultivate the soil to a depth of 6 inches. Remove weeds and rocks, and pulverize clumps that can obstruct root growth. Incorporate a 2-inch layer of compost into the soil and work in a nitrogen fertilizer.
2. Sow the scarlet globe radish seeds about 1 inch apart and 1/2 inch deep in rows that are 1 foot apart. As an alternative, broadcast the seeds on a bed, and thin the seedlings to 2 inches apart when they emerge. For a continuous harvest, sow scarlet globe radish seeds at 10-day intervals up until three weeks after the last spring frost or up until three weeks before the first fall frost.
3. Water the soil and keep it moist -- not soggy -- throughout the germination period. After germination, follow a regular watering schedule. Don't allow the soil to fully dry. Expect germination within three to four days.
4. Pull up the scarlet globe radishes by their tops as soon as the roots reach an edible size close to 1 inch in diameter. Trim the leaves with scissors or a knife, and store the radishes in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to three weeks. Avoid leaving scarlet globe radishes in the ground too long, because this negatively affects their crispness and flavor.
