Don't force anything on it. They are tender and delicate instruments. If it is a wind up, then to often the main spring is damaged by tightening it too much. If it needs a battery then nothing you do will help... cheers
They do withstand a lot of daily "abuse" or normal wear & tear. Human with power tools never good for the watch, eh! You could see if there is an indentation along the back cover rim. Slide a knife tip under it and twist a bit. The back should pop open and you can see what it is. Battery or good old fashioned wind up with a spring. hmm, come to think of it, some of these pocket watches use a 1/4 turn of the whole back to either side. Don't sweat it, she is quite pretty and no matter working or not I bid on it. So, one way or the other, you shouldn't worry about it too much.... :-)
