They don't take battery's. These books are made for Leapfrog readers, the readers have a built in speaker. The books have magnetic electronic's inside them. The books will not work without the Leapfrog reader device. I am not listing the leapfrog device. I am only listing what you see in the photos above. Get the device and you will be happy you saved a lot of money biding on the books and cartridges.
