Do whatever you can not to panic and try and back up slowly and then wait and wait and wait ... Everything people say about throwing rocks and kicking dust is all lies and only makes them mad.

That is much smarter than me!! I guess I used to be on the same schedule as them becuase i would run into them on the paths all the time. I've never been bothered by one (luckily) but then i don't bother them either!! LOL

I just love them!! And I have been on a hunt since I moved here to see a Gila monster- never seen one yet. I've been tracked by coyotees in a standoff with a rattler, jogged with tarantula ( during mating season they run beside things that move), stung by a scorpion , but never have I seen the illusive Gila monster!

Yep the horned lizard. Some people also call 'em ***** toads. Supposedly they can squirt blood from their eyes - I've never seen them do that. But then I've only seen one or two. They are a sacred animal on reservations.

HERE's Some More Old West insults:
He was mad enough to swallow a horn-toad backwards.

He moves as slow as a crippled turtle.

This bird was adopted in 1973 as Arizona's State Bird. Let me know if I am right
