Lemon Mint
Monarda citriodora (Lemon Mint)
With a delightful lemon scent and lavender flowers, this wildflower is a favorite of butterflies and hummingbirds.
Also called purple horse mint or lemon bee balm, is, as the names imply, a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), which has a citrus smell when crushed, reminiscent of the fruit of the actual lemon plant, and which has purple flowers that prove irresistible to both bees and hummingbirds.
One of the scented wild mints that flowers with lavender-pink flowers.
Sometimes, especially late in the season, the odor is described as resembling oregano more than lemon.
Aromatic foliage makes it deer resistant. Citridora is used as a natural insect repellent, and when it is plentiful you can grab a handful of leaves and rub them on your skin to keep the bugs away. Native Americans incorporated the use of Lemon Mint leaves for edible greens, seasoning, and as an aromatic tea. Allow it to re-seed itself before mowing.
The leaves, when crushed release a sweet citrus aroma.
A good variety to attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden; the dried stems provide an interesting addition to any floral arrangement.
