It is an engraving and old. My aunt who passed away in the 1970's had it matted. It was made from an engraving plate and not printed on a modern press. The illustration was probably from original artwork done by artist new correspondence of a publications during the Civil War. Engravings of artists sketches were only method of illustrating at a time when photography was new and not easily made into print form..

Engravings were big sellers during the Civil War but but the engravings gave way to the new art form of photography in years following the Civil War. Engraving showed things photography could not at the time record such as naval battles or scenes of combat. Most Civil War photos are of individuals or general scenes before or after a battle and rarely if ever during a battle. The earlier auctioned engraving of troops going into Charleston SC was definitely created at the time for some newspaper or periodical of the time. The Monitor and Merrimac and Vicksburg battle scene ones were probably also created for such publications or for use in book about the Civil War shortly after the war was over. Higher priced limited edition histories and biographies often used engravings rather than photographs as they better illustrated battles as well as could be drawn to enhance the writers perspective or even his role in events illustrated.

Actually only moved to Lexington in last year. My aunt who I inherited these from was from Iowa and Nebraska so they are not from around here. I was twenty years overseas with the Dept. of Defense and these had been in storage during that period.

Historical fact, Vicksburg and Gettysburg battles were around the same time. The victory at Vicksburg cut the South in two and brought Grant the leadership role of Union commander. Vicksburg surrendered on July 4th and for over 100 years after the 4th of July was not celebrated in Vicksburg.
