We went to Washington D.C. and used the Metro subway system. The SmarTrip cards cost $2 each with nothing on them, but we didn't use every penny. One of them has $9.45 balance, so it is ready to use, the others have to have money added at the machines in any subway station, because the lowest fare is $2.00. They have only $1.45 each.
