Yes, this does work very well and has a good volume. The volume is adjusted from your device. I used it last summer while camping, it was very handy.

does it charge fro m device if has rechargable batteries or no?

This is not a rechargeable device. It uses batteries to run it. You plug in the mp3 player with the adapter shown in the picture, and it becomes the speaker for your device.

I posted the back picture, it's where the on-off switch is, and the hole is for holding the cord when not in use. The bottom picture is where the batteries go.

the back: the wire wraps around the indentation then the hole holds the wire when not in use.

I had a question by email as to whether or not it works with an ipod, I don't think it would fit, perhaps if you got an adapter it would. It does work with the computer really well, I tried that and the volume was great. In fact, rather nifty, I hadn't realized it would do that.
