Description

The listing, This REALLY is the Last "Beautiful Live Black Bamboo for Your Yard" Auction has ended.

I had some requests that I couldn't refuse.... LOL

Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys Nigra)

I will share some of my Black Bamboo with you. This is a VERY EXPENSIVE plant to buy, but I will dig up some of my rhizomes (the underground stem with roots from which the plants grow) and mail them to you via First Class Mail.

This auction is for 3 black bamboo rhizomes.

Black Bamboo canes are colored green the first year and turn black the second year. Your plants will produce culms (the canes or stems) that have a smaller diameter the first season, but they will become larger and larger with time. Some of mine are as large around as a tennis ball.

Height: I have two strands of black bamboo of this species that I planted about 20 years ago. The strand in the sun grows to 30+ feet; the one I have in partial shade grows to about 18-22'. This plant makes an excellent privacy screen -- that is how I have used it.

Temperatures and water: They are fine down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If you have extended cold winters I would mulch heavily. Hot summers are fine provided they don't stay dry for an extended period of time during their first season. During their first season, they will need to be kept watered more frequently; after that, they will need no extra care -- I never need to water mine, and they were unaffected (other than some leaf damage) through two summers that we had with drought conditions. For the first two weeks after planting, you will need to keep them moist at all times until they get established.

The first picture shows the pretty black canes, and the last is a picture of black bamboo rhizomes.

I will ship these First Class Mail with material to keep them moist. You will need to get them in the ground (and watered) as soon as possible after you receive them.

I'll be glad to answer all questions, and I also
recommend you Google this plant if you are interested.

Shipping will be $14.00 via Paypal

Tell ya what... if you make it all the way down here to Alabama from CA for some of my black bamboo, I'll give you the bamboo, and I'll buy you a beer (or the beverage of your choice). :-)

Yay!!! I had heard of Southern Hospitality, and now I am reading it with my very own eyes! Regarding the bamboo, I do not own the little place where I live, so all my plants are in pots. Also I know how those rhizomes can be..... So if I planted them in a large pot, what kind of growth would be expected? And would it be wise to put all 3 rhiyzomes in one pot? Also, do they really drink mint juliep in the South? Because that is what I would choose over beer, and I would pick up the tab. :)

Yes, Ma'am, we drink our mint juleps on the porch every evenin' while rockin' an' gossipin' 'bout these crazy politicians we got down here.;-)

The bamboo will do fine in large pots outdoors. And I don't think you could fit all three in one pot, unless you want to try them in something bathtub-sized.:-) But if you want, I could try to dig up some smaller rhizomes, or even one large, and two smaller if you want to try to go with two large pots.

Does it like nitrogen-rich soil, and in a pot, I would expect it to require frequent watering, right? And do you know the Japanese poem about bamboo?
May 2nd, 2010 at 6:09:02 AM PDT by
Original
Yes, rich soil; it likes a lot of organic material, or a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen in the spring. No, I don't know the poem -- no dirty limericks, now!

In the winter where I live my side of the building is shady, and my plants have to tolerate it. How would the black bamboo do?
May 2nd, 2010 at 9:41:44 PM PDT by
Original
They will do fine -- I have some in fairly deep shade.

will the bamboo grow in a shady environment? thanks
May 3rd, 2010 at 9:50:35 PM PDT by
Original
Yes, if you keep them in outdoors they will do fine. They may not grow quite as tall, but they will still as beautiful.
