Description

The listing, CIVIL WAR STRONG BOX KEY has ended.

A strong box key containing the name of the Eagle Lock Company of Terryville, Connecticut found at a Union Army Camp Site near Lexington, Virginia. The Union Army burned the Virginia Military Institute and looted Washington College (now known as Washington and Lee University) as well as burned and looted other homes in the community. The winner of the auction will receive the key shown separately along with the information sheet bearing a picture of the Eagle Lock Company as it looked at the time of the Civil War when the key and lock were produced. The key used an unusual double teeth design to make it harder to pick the lock on a small strong box, the kind kept by individuals to keep money and valuables.

The key is NOT attached to the information sheet and can be displayed separately or put on the 8 1/2 x 11 inch information sheet for display this way. The auction should be of special interest to Civil War fans, key collectors, and history buffs.

The unique design of the key was one of the early first edition of keys and locks made by the Eagle Lock Company and one of rarer keys made by the company. Strong boxes made with Eagle Lock were expensive and tended to be owned only by wealthy and businesses. It probably was taken from a Lexington business or large home owner in the community by the Hunter's raiders who robbed, looted and destroyed much during their stay in Lexingtion.
