not sure what this is or if i need it i got a lap top for xmas and i have a desk top will this help me transfer my pics off desk top to my lap top?

This takes your SD card or micro-SD card and connects to USB. It makes it easier to download pictures if you don't already have a card slot on your laptop or desktop. Same thing for a tablet.

I have a duplicate one that I have been using on my laptop with NO trouble at all. Having been in the computer industry for over 20 years, I have NEVER heard of a usb device harming a computer. I think the GEEKSQUAD was feeding you a line to sell you a new computer.
