"Winter is Coming" is the motto of House Stark, one of the Great Houses of Westeros. The meaning behind these words is one of warning & constant vigilance. The Starks, the lords of the North, strive to always be prepared for the coming of winter (and White Walkers?), which hits their lands the hardest.

Over time, the White Walkers passed from fact into fairy tale. No one believed in their existence anymore. No one knows where they came from, but they descended upon Westeros from the farthest north, the polar regions of the Lands of Always Winter. Later he fell in love with a woman “with skin as white as the moon & eyes like blue stars”, he chased her & loved her though “her skin was cold as ice,” and when he gave his seed to her he gave his soul as well. He brought her back to the Nightfort & after the unholy union, he declared himself king & her his queen, and ruled the Nightfort as his own castle for 13 years. He was eventually defeated by the Starks, the Night's Watch, & the Wildlings.
