Description

The listing, Three cuttings: Kalanchoe Marnieriana has ended.

This is one of my favorite succulents! The color is a gorgeous silver blue with pink edges on nearly round, stacked leaves. It's beautiful in a hanging pot, or planted in an an arrangement with other succulents.

This kalanchoe is a sub-shrub from Madagascar, and as such, doesn't tolerate freezing temperatures. It likes full sun to shade, though I'd be careful about leaving it in the sun all day in the hottest part of the summer. I grow mine in a pot on the porch where it gets morning and late afternoon sun.

As you can see from the pics, this plant sends out pretty pink adventitious roots, looking for soil to spread into. If you live in a temperate/tropical growing zone, you can plant it outside and it will spread to make a beautiful small shrub. It sends out new shoots where leaves fall off, and the leaves themselves will even make babies! How cool is that? It's a relatively fast grower and produces rose/red tubular flowers in the spring.

The cuttings I will send are the three in the first photo; the parent plant is shown in subsequent photos. They all have roots ready for planting, just throw the stems in some soil! As with all succulents, I recommend adding extra perlite/pumice to a standard potting mix so the roots don't stay wet. These need very little water once established, though I do give a bit more during blooming season.

Okay then. I was planning on getting some Perlite anyway so that's great. I've been looking at all of the beautiful cacti, etc. on here for a while & will probably try to get me a few. :) I would have already except one of my cats will NOT stay out of plants. However, I think I've come up with the perfect spot. haha!

Oh, cats can be tricky! I'm having trouble with squirrels at the moment. Those brazen little beasts will come right up on the porch to dig in my pots and taste test leaves! I've had to bring most of my succulents inside, and it's getting a bit crowded. :)

LOL!!!!! Cats are something else. :) We have 2 dogs & 2 cats. The youngest cat, my sweet baby, thinks she's a dog. She sometimes gets in between them & sleeps. IF she's not up on my pillow next to me-& I have allergies. haha We didn't even know we had a pear tree until a few months after we moved here & my brother saw it out back. We never have gotten any of them, it used to make me mad but I guess I'm just used to it now. My veggies & herbs are another matter though. Next year I'm putting chicken wire around the veggies & keeping my herbs on the deck. :)

Thank you! I've got a thing for blue plants and round leaves, so this kalanchoe will always be a fave.

I love blue anyway, I bought me a blue Hosta when we moved into this house. :) I've heard of Kalanchoe before but I don't recall having ever seen it. Does it need some sand mixed into the soil like some other succulents do?

Oooo, blue hostas are gorgeous! Kalanchoe plants do need very porous soil so water doesn't sit around their roots or stem. Sand can help, and pumice, perlite, or even gravel in a pinch. A specialty cactus mix is great for all succulents! If you plant a succulent in the ground, it's a good idea to make a much bigger hole than you need, and fill it in with the extra airy soil so there's a quick-draining area around the plant. This particular plant isn't as picky as some. Thanks for the great question!

Oh yeah, we live out in the country surrounded by woods, so we have a problem with squirrels, Racoons, Possums, & then some raiding our garden every year & SOMETHING always robs us of every single pear on our tree about the time they get around 2". :) My cat won't leave any plant alone that we've brought into the house, so I'm thinking on top of the microwave that's on top of the chopping block for some succulents. Hahaha!!

Uhg, it would be so frustrating to lose an entire crop of pears!
On top of your microwave sounds perfect, or maybe a hanging pot? My cat doesn't intentionally mess with my plants, but he rubs against everything! He brushes the coating of bloom off some plants and a couple of my cacti are full of cat hair. It's not a good look! Lol, gotta love 'em, though ;)

Aren't you lucky to live in the country where you have a pear tree and veggie garden! I hope you have better luck with the critters next year :)
