Description

The listing, .925 Silver Marcasite Teardrop Pendant Necklace has ended.

**TODAY'S THEME:
Marcasite Jewelry

**WHAT IS MARCASITE JEWELRY?:
Marcasite jewelry has been made since the time of the Ancient Greeks and is considered to be both traditional and elegant; allowing a vintage touch to your outfits or a more modern chic.
Marcasite is made from small faceted pieces of pyrite, or iron pyrite, usually set in sterling silver. The pyrites are usually cut to look like diamonds and are then set into elaborate designs. The contrast between the two metallic shades of gray, creates a combination that is stunning with a dramatic vintage look. Often pieces have a tarnished look to, which adds even more of that special appeal.

**WINNER RECEIVES:
A teardrop shaped Marcasite pendant on a simple link chain that completes the look for this adored necklace.

**COST OUT OF POCKET:
FREE Marcasite Pendant Necklace + FREE Shipping

**COMMENTS:
I have always loved this type of jewelry that manages to look sophisticated and elegant even when the pieces are substantial. I hope you enjoy the selected piece I am auctioning here today. The measurements are noted in my photographs for your information.

Whiting & Davis: The Whiting & Davis Company is best known for making mesh chains and mesh purses, but they also introduced a popular and successful jewelry line. Founder C. W. Whiting worked for a local chain manufacturing company which had been founded in 1876 by William Wade and Edward P. Davis. The company began making fashion accessories to complement their other offerings, and they became quite well known for their silver and gold mesh handbags and purse accessories. As Whiting's talents and expertise grew, he soon became a partner and owner in the business in 1907. When the company introduced their jewelry line, they utilized their technical expertise making mesh to create typically sterling silver or silver plated metalwork as the foundation for their pieces. In contrast to most costume jewelry of the day, Whiting & Davis introduced applied transfer porcelain jewelry and cameos as well as a line of iridescent glass jewelry. Whiting and Davis created many original designs, but they also did reproduction copies of museum pieces in the 1950s that also proved popular with the public and now with collectors. Whiting & Davis still produces mesh purses and accessories in Attleboro, Massachusetts, but they stopped making jewelry in 1983. Whiting & Davis jewelry is typically impressed "Whiting & Davis" in the metal, sometimes within a cartouche. UPDATE: I've located the original sterling silver chain, and I'm pondering providing it with the pendant for the auction...I guess we'll see how it pans out.

So I looked a bit more @ it, and I can tell it's an Italy mark. I am leaning towards cn as the lettering...perhaps cuneo? I'll try to get those photos to you.

@jeremybarrett81: You know, that's the question of the week....I cannot for the life of me figure this one out. I've familiarized myself quite well with the different maker's marks (and there's tons) even with my magnifier & special light, I am torn as to what the letters are. Jamesinmich76 asked earlier in this auction & I had only the same answer. If you haven't already, check out http://www.925-1000.com/ for the online encyclopedia for this type of stuff...it's really interesting~

@jamesinmich76: Hi there, the stamps on the back indicate what the piece is made with in addition to the company's 'stamp' so-to-speak. The pendant has .925 parts whole solid silver of 1000 parts or 92.5% sterling silver. The other stamp is hard to make out myself. I researched online different marks & this one stumps me...
