The listing, Inside Glass Hand Painted Perfume/Snuff Bottle has ended.
Snuff bottles were originally used during the Qing Dynasty to carry powder tobacco as smoking was illegal during that time.
Snuff was considered a medicine and a treatment for all kinds of ailments including colds, stomach aches and headaches.
Once smoking was legal these prized possessions became collector’s items The inside painted bottles often depict a scene and calligraphy, usually a poem.
They were painted using a tiny brush, sometimes as small a a single hair, and was achieved through the neck of the bottle.
The more detailed the scene and the more famous the artist the more valuable the bottles are.
This one has on each side roosters and hens in colors of, red, yellow, white, black gray and green. Comes w/stopper top, but missing stem/spoon. Excellent condition otherwise. No cracks, chips, or paint loss.
There is a small red mark on one side, could be a makers mark, its too small to see even w/a loop.
Comes with its own cloth lined/lidded box.
Stands at 4"x4"
I was looking through some snuff bottle web pages, and couldn't pinpoint anything that resembled this one, that's why I question it to be perhaps a perfume bottle instead?
But I did notice that just about every hand painted inside glass bottle never ran under the $60.00 mark.
This is a great collectable to add to anyone's collection.
Good luck, and happy bidding!
