In 1995 the confederate mining co. applied for a lease on federal land to mine for gold. After many years of studies and huge amounts of paper work the company finally got the lease and mining rights. The confederate mining co. became the first to ever mine gold on federal land east of the Mississippi. In 2010 C.M.C. was the only legal operating gold mine in the state of S.C. The founders of C.M.C. decided to take some of the gold and strike a coin. At first it was an experiment just for fun to see if they could. Robert Price cut a set of dies by hand. The obverse die has the palmetto palm which is the S.C. state tree. The obverse also has S.C. on it. The palmetto tree design was similar to the early S C militia buttons of the early 1800’s .The reverse die was designed with a simple CMC stacked, 2010, and a small c mint mark representing the town of Cowpens S C. The striking of the coins is as primitive as it gets. The blank is hammered out of melted gold from the mine. The blank is placed between the two dies. A holding hammer is placed on top of the dies and struck with a larger hammer. The 2010 coins were an instant success, every one that saw them wanted one. The company decided to limit the gold coins to only 104 a year. The company also decided to change the die design each year. The 2011 has a different palmetto design it is similar to the SC dispensary bottles of the 1800’s. The reverse has crossed picks with the letters CMC it also has 2011 in roman numerals. The reverse has the mint mark a small c below the picks that represents the town of Cowpens S.C. the gold coins are minted in 10, 20, and a 30 gram coin..
