Description

The listing, NEW UK 1st Edition/54th Print Hardcover Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has ended.

I am giving away a brand new hardcover British copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone! I believe that it is a first edition copy. The copyright page says "First published in 1997", and it doesn't mention any other publishings, which indicates that it's a first edition copy. I believe that it's a 54th printing because the number "54" is stamped at the bottom of the page. It is a brand new, unread copy that comes with a dust cover. The dust cover has a small, barely noticeable crease on the front on it's bottom(you can see it in the 1st pic). Other than that, I can't find any other issues with the book.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first book of the Harry Potter series, and it was first published in England by Bloomsbury books in 1997. Later, when the series reached the USA, the 1st book was renamed "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", and it was publish by Scholastic books. It was renamed by Scholastic books after they bought the USA rights to the book because they believed that children would not want to read a book with the word "philosopher" in the title. At any rate, I am giving away the British version as penned by J. K. Rowling.

And, if you buy this book from England, the S&H fee will be high (it always is). But, you can avoid it by winning it here for free on Listia :)

This can't be a first edition because it says Warner Bros. 2000.

The Harry Potter name, characters, etc. was copyrighted by Warner Bros. in 2000. This is a 54th printing. There have been 53 printings since this book was first published in 1997; however, no later edition dates are listed for the published date. It would say something like "later edition published in 2000" or it would have a second date listed as the published date if it were a subsequent edition. So, that's what I went off of. Like I said, there have been 53 printings (which are the same as impressions), since it was first published. I think that's what the 54 means, anyway. But, like I said, I'm not an expert. Moreover, this book is pretty rare to find (there are not a lot like it listed even on E-bay, esp. a hardback copy). Hardbacks are more valuable than paperbacks (like, a 54th hardback printing is worth more than a 54th paperback printing). Actually, I think that a later edition was published in the year 2000 , so, take it as you will....

Very nice auction. It can't be a first edition book though because of the award winner description on the front cover.

Thanks! Well, I thought that it's a first edition because of the copyright page (it says that it was "First published in Great Britain in 1997" and there are no subsequent publishings mentioned). If there were other later publishings mentioned, then it would not be a first edition. But, with that being said, I know that it is a 54th impression/print because of the "54" printed at the bottom of the page. Honestly, the award on the title page doesn't have anything to do with it. It's all about the info. on the copyright page. But, I'm not a book expert either. I did a lot of research on it, but I could be wrong too. I'm just going off of my research and the copyright page. I try my best! Oh, and I submitted this listing to Listia to be featured, but they did not feature it for some reason, but it did not get removed either. So, I'm pretty sure that I'm correct. A picture of the copyright page is included with this auction.

Yeah, Listia censors the funniest things! Like, I typed out "h e ' l l" (as in "he will") without the spaces one time, and Listia wouldn't recognize the apostrophe and censored my word!

Oh, and I should add, you can only find this book in England. If someone is selling it in the USA, then it was brought over or sent to them from England. You can't buy this book in the USA from a USA bookstore. So, as you may have guessed, this book was sent to me directly from England.

Actually, I'm kind of just curious to see how it will do. I don't think that 3000 credits is a bad offer, but I like to take risks sometimes and just see how things play out. (Plus, I took some NyQuil about 20 mins. ago because I'm sick, so I'm not thinking too clearly right now, & I don't want to make any hasty decisions, although, 3000 doesn't seem unfair....I think that I just need to go pass out in my bed).

You know, I don't know if the content is exactly the same or not. I know that this was book was first published in 1997, and the Sorcerer's Stone was published later in 1998. The titles were changed, but I would think that the content is the same. I also know that when the Philosopher's Stone was first published (in the first prints), there were several typos that were later fixed. I don't think that the typos are still present in this book. Only about 500 first print books of the Philosopher's Stone were published, and if you can find one of them, they are worth hundreds of dollars (I'm not even joking....they are worth a ton of $$).

Yep, it's a lot different than the American editions. It's the British edition (different title, different cover, different publisher, etc.). This is the first book of the Harry Potter series that came out in England before it hit America. When Scholastic Books bought the US rights to publish the Harry Potter series, they changed the title from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. :)
