The listing, Vikki'sGarden◠◡✿Gothic BLACK KNIGHT HOLLYHOCKS ~ Sacred, Edible Flower ~ Aleca Rosa Nigra 15 Seeds! has ended.

"Of a dark red like black blood..."

Said John Parkinson in his 1629, graphic description of the fascinating and rare Aleca Rosa Nigra.

Though most folks associate the Hollyhock with Victorian Cottage Gardens, this exotic bloom has a fascinating history dating as far back as 50,000 years to a Neanderthal burial site. Thus, we know it was extremely important and sacred at a very early time for humanity. Also of interest to the theme of this flower being "sacred" is the company it kept, including; The Knight's Crusaders, who believed the flower had healing qualities and named it 'Holly'hock for the 'Holy' Land. Yet this sacred bloom also found a happy home among Japanese Shogun's and Tutor Royalty! In fact, the use of this flower in non-traditional 'Cottage Gardens' may have been the first time Hollyhocks were ever used by non-priest or grown outside sanctioned royal gardens!

Flowers, seeds, roots and leaves of Hollyhock are all edible! The blooms have been used as culinary decoration for centuries. To make a sweet delight, simply dip a flower in egg white and then roll in sugar. In the South, the candy bell delights are turned upside down and used as Southern Belle dresses adoring cakes and pastry's. The leaves can be used in the same manner you would use spinach leaves, raw, cooked or baked. The seeds can be eaten raw or added to salads. And the roots were used for medicinal cures.

Direct sow Hollyhocks where you want them for a early Spring showing!

I never even thought of a hollyhock as an edible plant. These seem like a hardy type of plant. What a rich history for this plant. Have you tasted this plant yourself?

I've collected all the types and colors I could find over the last season and have just planted what I hope becomes a wall of all the flavors :) I've seen them as decorations but have never tried one, so I will have to report back. As for hardy...they'll maintain freezing temps of zone 6 which can sustain 0 degrees. What's neat about the Black Hollyhocks is the added rarity of natural black flowers.

The Midwest has a harsh climate and this plant would do well here. We just had snow on Sunday and my Rosemary herb in the big wooden pot out back is still green and alive. I also have a Miracle Grow aquatic pod/light grower in the house. Cherry tomatoes are still growing on the vines.

How wonderful setting up a greenhouse. The mini grower is about all my budget can handle, but it is fun having a little produce in the winter. My next seed pods will be a lettuce mix after the Cherry tomatoes are done producing. The grower notifies me when to add water and nutrients.

Oh yes, I'm pretty jazzed about the greenhouse! It was a gift from my son, so we'll see how it goes. Guess I need to read up on them. I've seen the ads for the grow pods and glad to hear they work so well. Since I probably can't afford one of them -- I'm still working with the cheap old school florescent lights, lol.

How big will the greenhouse be? This is so exciting for you. What a wonderful gift from your son. The growers work well and the seeds are guaranteed or they give replacement pods. Cilantro just didn't work in the grower or even outside.

I'm guessing its about 7x8...not a huge one but that will prevent me from having to heat it with an outside source. Though here in the Carolina's we're just now getting our first cold days...last week I had my AC running. Curious if you have to use their grow pod and seeds with your light system? I noted you said it notifies you when to water and fert so I'm guessing its aligned with the self contained pods. I'm an herb fiend and would keep it loaded all season in the kitchen with fabulous goodies for cooking. As for the cilantro...must have gotten a bad batch as they're a pretty easy going and non fussy grow.

That seems like a good size for a small greenhouse. We have been running our heat since October. Chicago gets extremely cold and can get extremely hot too. Next week it is single digit temps...it already feels cold in the 20s with more snow on the way. I have to use their grow pod system, but there is an Everything pod group where I can add the seeds I want. I guess the cilantro seeds I got were fussy and didn't want to grow.
