Description
The listing, Beautiful amethyst sterling silver ring has ended.
This ring is probably a 6.5. It is gorgeous with sparkling diamond-like accents all around the amethyst. I won this stunning ring on Listia, but it is too big on my short, stubby finger. I think I wear a size 6, and this ring turns a little on my finger, so that's why I think it must be a 6 1/2. I really love the ring, but it just looks too big on my hand. Free shipping.
Questions & Comments
Is it stamped sterling or 925? Also is the area behind the stone open or closed?
It is stamped 925, and the area behind the stone is open. There are also some other letters stamped inside the band, but I can't tell what they are. It looks like WTHM, but I don't know if that is what it is or what it means. Thanks for looking.
When I won it, the seller said it was amethyst. And I don't know stones very well, so I just suppose it is amethyst. It is beautiful, whichever it is. Thanks.
The WTHM is probably the maker/sponsor's mark. The ring is not set in marcasite. The metal in which the amethyst is mounted is marked 925 so that means it is 925 of 1000 parts pure silver: this is virtually universally accepted as "Sterling Silver". The number is the important indicator of the metal. The other 75 parts are probably copper or nickel both of which are regularly used to strengthen silver. "Fine silver" [also called Jerusalem Silver or Peruvian silver] 999 of 1000 parts pure is really too soft (maleable) to hold the form for jewelry or other items. I think it would be very interesting to know who WTHM is but there is no generally directory or regulation of silversmithing. The silver metal content mark (i.e. 925 o4 950, etc) is not even required by law in the United States !! Most reputable jewelers mark their jewelry according the the 1972 Vienna Convention for hallmarks because jewelry is traded so much internationally. WTHM could be an assayer's mark, a maker/sponsor's mark, or sometimes a location mark. It would be interesting if you could tell us all you know about where the ring came from.
I used to have this ring, it was my favorite, It broke =( I can't believe there is another one on here and I don't have enough credits to bid.....,.maybe I'll see it again! GReat Auction, Please check out mine too
It was my auction she got it from and it does have marcasites in the sterling silver. It is really a nice ring and was expensive to buy. Great amethyst stone on it, too.
I loved the ring. It just turned on my finger. I have short, stubby fingers. But it is beautiful. I hat to part with it, but it just didn't fit right.so I decided to list it. It is stunning!
