# More likely, walnut...and they are still very common in specific parts of India where an artisan might get, at most, around $5-$6 ( $8 at best ) for exactly such a box. Design & size abound...Exporters & middlemen pocket the rest as they sell in the capital city of New Delhi ( where i reside ) for upward of $20 or thereabouts depending on which market one is visiting. The emporia catering exclusively to the tourists - on way to Agra - charge the most - $32 to $50 & possibly $100+ for a larger box / a more intricate design.
I happen to know so much because i buy them to store my coin collection in. At Listia, i am a member MAINLY FOR STAMPS.
Hi Drew! This looks like Sheesham wood grown in India..It is a durable "burl" type of wood & it was very popular for trinket boxes in the 70's but you don't really see as much anymore..Not too much of it is marketed in the US & when you find it there is always a pretty high price tag.. Most people do not know what it is & us "hippies" did not care back then..lol..I sold one on ebay for $75 last year in 2 days
Regardless this is stunning & hoping to bid. A very happy holiday season to you & yours too :))
