The listing, INDIAN ARROWHEAD has ended.
Arrowhead found near Beecher Island Colorado battlefield. Believed to be Cheyenne arrowhead perhaps used in hunting or perhaps relic of battle between cavalry and Cheyenne Indians? The arrowhead is made of a grey shale like stone found in eastern Colorado and is about 1 1/4 inches long and just short of an inch at widest point. Note scan is of actual arrowhead but some distortion of size has occured in scan.
I found it at a reunion of my wife's family in 1995 at Beecher Island, Colorado. It clearly was man made as it shows signs of being chipped into shape and not natural arrowhead shaped stone. Whether or not it is Cheyenne I can only guess but since the stone is from that area and that area was predominently Cheyenne tribal land I am guessing it is from that tribe but have no proof of that or idea of age of the arrowhead.
Relatives in Colorado tell me arrowheads used to be found quite commonly in the area prior to a flood back in the 1930's which destroyed a monument to the Indian and cavalry battle that took place there. The monument was rebuilt on higher ground and the river, now just a small stream is fraction of it's old size.
As I know the story a unit of cavalry was trapped on an island in middle of the river for several days fighting off attacks by the Cheyenne. A couple of soldiers slipped away at night and on foot traveled until met up with another cavalry group that came to the others rescue.
