After asking a friend, this appears to be Japanese (kanji) or more likely, Chinese

Yes I have one too. This is a Chinese coin. Sometimes you see these coins in shops where you can buy in American items for celebrating different customs. I purchased a beautiful necklace my daughter wanted that was crystal over 22k and they sold these in their store. If you ever see one sitting in a floor in a frogs mouth' It is suppost to be sitting in a corner facing a door for good luck and wealth. My coin is not an old coin as this one. Yours appears to be from an earlier century and absolutely real. My coin is a reproduction I saw being sold today. Good Luck
