Mine in tennessee is clay also...you should be fine...to get them started i would dig a hole then put a bag of top soil in the hole then plant the seeds...that way they have soft soil till they get rooted pretty good.

these plants are very hardy in our region and grow wild in the mountains so they should grow in just about anytype of soil. i have the purple in my yard but have never seen the red and it is gorgeous!!
