What if you don't have glass to cover them? Can you use something else? Do they have to be put in sand for them to grow? TY

You don't have to use glass. You can use a plastic food container or something like that. You have to use something. The purpose like roses is to retain the moisture without risking molding with too much water. They need sandy soil so the seed and roots won't retain too much moisture and rot the seed or the roots. Cactus doesn't need a lot of water. The sand helps the water drain to the bottom. I hope this helps.
