Many collectors will find these coins especially significant because they mark the 100th anniversary of the original Walking Liberty design that is used on the obverse of this coin, as well as the 30th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle itself. The highly acclaimed obverse design is set against a backdrop of the sun setting behind a mountain on the horizon. In the foreground, Liberty, wearing a Phrygian, carries laurel and oak branches as she walks toward the left side of the coin. That design was created by Adolph Weinman. The reverse, which John Mercanti adapted from the Great Seal of the United States for the original Silver Eagle, features a shield at the center. That shield is protected by an eagle.
