He was a player for Washington Senators (now the Minnesota Twins) from 1928-1934. He also managed the Senators in 1933-1934. He was the fifth straight strikeout victim of Carl Hubbell’s screwball during the 1934 All-Star game. Hubbell fanned Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Simmons and Cronin in order.
Cronin, then was the player-manager of the Boston Red Sox from 1935-1945. His successor at SS was Johnny Pesky. Cronin then managed the Red Sox in 1946 and 1947.
The pennant winning 1946 Red Sox had LF Ted Williams, SS Johnny Pesky, CF Dom DiMaggio (Joe’s younger brother), 2B Bobby Doerr and 1B Rudy York as teammates in the same lineup.
Cronin then became the Red Sox GM during the near misses in the 1948 and 1949 seasons and stayed there until 1959.
He took over as the AL president during the expansion era of the 1960s as the eight American League charter members welcomed and added the Los Angeles Angels, Washington Senators (Texas Rangers), Seattle Pilots (Milwaukee Brewers) and Kansas City Royals. He was AL president until 1973.
