Description

The listing, Irradiated Dime - 1964 NYC Worlds Fair has ended.

Dime Irradiated at the Atomic Energy Commission exhibit at the NY World's Fair 1964 or 1965,
The photos you see are online references, not my souvenir, which is also in very good condition.

ORIGINALLY 90% Silver, NOW over 45% Cadmium as a result of irradiation. A metals test by a precious metals dealer should show this is NO LONGER a silver coin! You can see it's a Roosevelt dime, but the Cadmium has become so tarnished I cannot make out the date. I have made NO attempt to clean this coin.
It CAN be removed from the soft plastic souvenir holder, but that is part of its value. Similar dimes from the AEC Oak Ridge Lab in Tennessee CANNOT be removed from their holder, according to online references you can find with Google.

This could be an added curiosity in your coin collection, OR a show-and-tell item for class study of atomic energy.

(Warning: if allowing others to handle it, leave it in a clear plastic bag or coin holder. It is not dangerous, and I understand the residual radiation is hard to detect, but it can be a pleasing historical possession that you don't want to lose.) )

I could not choose a value, but I found an eBay seller asking over $50 for theirs. I have set free shipping to simplify the transaction. You will not be disappointed!

Thanks, I thought so too, which is why I kept it for 45 years. I'm sure the winner will like it because it is so unusual: how many people can say they have a cadmium dime?

I captured the photo & blew it up & enhanced it & rotated it 90 degrees & it looks like a 1995 dime... so, somebody took out the original dime & replaced it with a 1995 dime!!
if i were you swooper, i would investigate which person you know mite have switched coins before you took photos & put up the auction!! get a 10x loop & you will see it for yourself... hope this helps, the plastic thing the coin is in, is well worth bidding on & it's very historic indeed!!!!

Dr.Bant, I commend you for your Due Diligence, but you will note that I say in my description that the photos are off the web. I thought my own photo might not be as clear. It's unfortunate if that web reference is deceptive. If you win this auction, I give my personal guarantee that the dime will be pre-1964 AND it will be part cadmium. How do I know? The souvenir coin has not left my personal possession in 45 years!!! I inserted a plain silver dime into the irradiation machine back at the world's fair. The appearance of what you will get is VERY CLOSE to the photo I have attached to the listing. If you're local, bring along your loupe or a magnifying glass. I would not risk my ratings or my ability to trade on Listia. By your honest remarks you have probably held down the offered bids. How can I ever repay you?
