James Arthur Baldwin was an American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic. Baldwin, who died in 1987 at the age of 67, was best known for novels such as "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "Another Country" and collections of essays including "Nobody Knows My Name." His works explored race relations, sexual issues, and cultural subjects.

Honored with a 37-cent stamp issued July 23 1994 in Harlem with ceremonies involving a cross-section of the black cultural community.
