Hibiscus sabdariffa, is frost tender and requires good, well-drained soil. This is an annual variety, usually started from seed. Choose a warm sunny garden spot and at least four months with warm night time temperatures.

Indoors: seed should be started indoors about eight weeks before nighttime temperatures are reliably 50 to 55°F – about the same time you might start pepper plants indoors. When seedlings have several sets of true leaves, gently transplant into 3-4 inch individual pots. I use biodegradable pots that can be planted directly into the soil.

Harden off the hibiscus seedlings and transfer to the garden when you do tomato plants.

Direct seed. Soak seed in water for up to 8 hours before planting. Plant 1/2” deep in warm, sunny soil. Keep the soil moist but not wet.
