Description

The listing, 1970 "Large Date/Low S" has ended.

This is a 1970 S mint penny (small cent). In 1970, Pennies had large dates and small dates (aka low 7 and high 7) as well as low S and high S. This is a large date low 7/low S. Common when minted, but not easy to find now. Of all of my 1970 pennies, this is the only one i've found that has a low S. I have only seen one other and it was in a coin shop. Feel free to ask any questions.

It isn't necessarily a misprint, the small date is one of the varieties. To my knowledge, each mint has 4 machines stamping pennies. Some in this year made small dates, some made large dates. Some had the low S and some had the high S. What makes one more valuable than the other is the amount made of each. Just like in 1982, there were zinc pennies and copper pennies. Some had small dates and some had large dates. Between P and D mints, they wound up with 7 varieties of that year. They didn't mean for the pennies to be like that, but so many turned out that way that it's hard to call them errors so they call them varieties. Errors are more like off centered, doubled dates and designs, etc. Varieties can be hard to find, but errors are almost impossible unless you look hard.
