Pansies are perennials that grow to about 8 inches in height and are commonly used in flower gardens and window planters. The flowers produced come in a wide variety of colors, and each flower can have up to three different colors. Pansies can bloom throughout the winter in mild climates and are winter-hardy throughout most regions.
Start your pansies now indoors for early spring planting. Fill your trays, pots, cups, etc with soil. Wet completely. Place seeds on top of the soil and cover with 1/16" soil. Mist with water. Cover with plastic wrap or top. Check every few days for moisture and mist with a sprayer. Remove the plastic when the seeds come up. Place in a sunny location and plant after danger of frost has past. Plant 8-12" apart for plenty of room to grow and spread. If you are planting inground,
press down and compact the soil over the entire planting area. Plant , spacing your seeds 6" apart. Water the bed lightly, just enough to moisten the soil without displacing the pansy seeds.
Apply water every one to two days, early in the morning, to allow the sun to evaporate any extra moisture. To keep your pansies coming back every year, water as with any flower especially in hotter climates. You will see them again in late fall. They can survive several light frosts. When they have died out in the winter, I cover mine with leaves, but you can use any kind of mulch. Around the first of March in most climates rake the leaves away and you will probably see them trying to pop up. If not, they soon will !
