The French Lilac or Common Lilac, is an upright, deciduous shrub which grows 8-15' tall. Leaves are ovate to cordate and dark green to 5" long. Light purple, sweetly fragrant, single flowers are arranged in dense, pyramidal, terminal clusters (panicles) which cover this shrub in late April to early May. In North American gardens, this is a very hardy shrub. Lilacs can withstand severely cold winters (to -31 degrees F) and in fact the species does not grow well in areas without significant frost in wintertime.



The French Lilac is well-known and loved by gardeners all over the world for its gorgeous flowers and captivating fragrance; one of the most powerful fragrances emitted by a plant.
