The listing, Gold Doubloon has ended.
This is from my grandfathers coin collection. It was passed down to me after he passed. I have 10 of them and figured i would share one. No certificate or anything like that, but i did take it to a coin specialist and he told me it was genuine. Happy bidding :).
That's pretty cool. I wouldn't of put this up here. I would of gotten it appraised first. Might be worth a good chunk of change. Unless you really don't care and it doesn't have any sentimental value.
Looks like one of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/50-shiny-gold-pirate-treasure-atocha-doubloon-cob-coins-/280820629675?pt=lh_defaultdomain_0&hash=item416236c0ab
My boyfriend lookad at this and wanted to comment about the great comments Josh Barron, Teriby Lund, and Greybeard. If it were a real 4 or 8 escudo piece, it should be HEAVY, and weigh aboult an ounce, the weight of about 3 half dollars, it should also NOT have a seam running around the rim and sound like a "tinny" thud when dropped on a wooden table top, like the cast replicas. The color should be like yellow butter, nearly solid .999 gold..
Even gold plated pewter replicas have some value. Like I mentioned above, it depends on the quality. My best duplicate doubloon is a jewelery quality replica made of solid gold. I paid about $700 for it, but even that one came with a COA, had a maker's mark, and a little booklet showing how it was cast from an authentic coin. When I got it home I acid tested it myself and made sure it was solid gold.
It should be nice as a wire pendent though. I wouldn't worry about the bids. If it were real it would be worth thousands, so people can't expect to get a real doubloon for a few points. The bidding might even go higher. Good luck.
OK. I hope everyone can see this!!!! It wont let me update for some reason so im going to write this in a comment. I went to have the coin looked at and NO it is not a genuine coin. It is a gold plated pewter coin. Im am sorry for the inconvenience. I will credit back whoever wins the coin if they decide they do not want it.
Hi, I own a real one. It cost me a fortune, this looks like a copy coin. The value varies greatly, anywhere from an entire bag full of them for 5 bucks, to 10 dollar realistic looking gold plated pewter coins. If the back is blank then it was probably on a pendant and worn as jewelry. Good quality copy coins do have value though. I have a couple of copy coins myself I had wire wrapped and made into pendants. The only way to know for sure is certification by a Cob expert, not just any old coin shop. People fake these all the time and it takes an expert to tell a good copy from the real thing. Good luck!
Never said it was real. Just though it was a cool item. I will gladly give whoever wins there credits back if it isnt.. Like i said, Im not trying to cause problems.
these are real ones...compared to them this one doesnt look so real, but im not an expert on these...the fake ones seem to be bright yellow and the old ones seem to be yellowish orange...i say get it certified
Gold. I stated that he said it was. I dont know if it is!. If you dont want it don bid! There are hundreds of different kinds. I dont have time to get it certified before the time ends. If you dont want it ill credit whoever back for it. Im not going to argue anymore about it. You want it or you dont.. Thats it. Im tired of rude ass people.
No,but you said the coin specialist told you it was authentic just get him to give you a standard document stating its authenticity &value as dabloom & melt down value. I was trying to help you.By showing authenticity you'll get more points for it, that's all.
I know you were just trying to help :). I just dont have time or cash to go get papers before the auction ends. I live about an hour from anything and i have to work all week. If i decide to auction off another one ill get papers for it.
Yes it should have a stamp on both sides to be truly autentic or else there should be damaged wear on the back. If it was part of a recovered salvage find then thats different because sometimes the coins (due to sea preasure) would fuse togather making it difficult to see any stamping on the fused side. But you really should post a pic of the other side to let people see for themselves.Hope it is authentic if so you should post a pic of the authentification papers,& then watch this auction shoot the moon!
