AMERICAN BEAUTYBERRY
Callicarpa americana

MADE IN AMERICA!
✿ڿڰۣღڿڰۣ✿

This Native American bush with its amazing berry's altering in colors from pink, fuchsia, violet, ultra-marine blue and purple, is aptly named BEAUTYBERRY!

Averaging 5-6' this bold bush also produces a mass of small pink bell flowers which are a magnet and food source for precious bee's. In fact the entire plant acts as a food for both humans and wildlife.

Though not recommended for consuming off the bush, the berry fruits are used for making jams and many ancient native American tribes used the fruit for medicinal medicines. Wildlife such as White-tailed deer, armadillos, raccoon's, the grey fox, mockingbirds and bobwhites, all feed on this plant when other plants have long gone to sleep for the winter.

As a bonus, when the leaves are crushed they act as a mosquito repellent!

If you have a nice semi-shaded spot in your garden just begging for a dynamic easy to grow beauty...you found it in the Callicarpa americana!

ORNAMENTAL: Yes. Bush.
GROW: Start indoors and then move seedlings outdoors.
GROWTH RATE: Fast. Height 6-8'.
STRATIFICATION: Not required but some folks report a better germination rate.
GERMINATE INDOORS: 6-8 weeks before last frost. Soak seed in water 24 hours. Top sow by gently pressing seed on top of well drained soil consisting of part peat and perlite, lightly sprinkle soil on top of seed. Place under tent and warm bright window. Keep soil moist, not wet.
SOW: When ground warms (60 degrees and above), add compost to soil and keep moist until plant is established.
ZONES: 6-10
SUN: Semi-shade
SOIL: Loamy. Well draining.
ADDED NOTE: Flowers are produced on new growth so after the berry's fall off in winter, prune the bush heavily, if not to the ground, so it will be ready to grow and re-bloom come Spring.

Hey sweetie! I try and list a few goodies every weekend :) But they do get a bit more sparse due to my lack of time between my website and real garden. Everything I list, I also grow or want to grow, therefore my little greenhouse is getting pretty stuffed-come on spring!!! You can always fast check to see if I have anything listed by typing Vikki'sGarden in you Listia browser.
