What is the story of the lucky money envelope? How do you use it?

I don't know it's story. But on Chinese new year, money was put in there and give to relatives or kids as a sign for good luck.
Im not sure either thought, lol.

they are called Lai See pronounced lay-see it is cantonese for lucky money.the Lai See is traditional a red envelope that is given to young or unmarried children by elders. the envelopes hold money. the amount of money in the envelope is always even as a sign of good luck. the amount of $4 is even but the number 4 is a sign of bad luck. hope that helps you out. fanned and watching

oh and the way to accept Lai See is
elders in the family hand the lai see to the child
the child accepts lai see with both hands
the child says, "Shei Shei," which means thank you in chinese
after the elder leaves, the child may open the lai see
