Description

The listing, Alpaca fiber for spinning yarn has ended.

Here is 6 ounces of alpaca fiber, tried to get it in different lighting. It has not been washed and you will want to do that after spinning, of course, during setting the ply... I carded it on my drum carder and then split it into roving and bundled it as you see here. It's very soft and beautiful. I got this fiber during a summer of a self created fiber collection adventure. Quite an experience! Questions welcome.

My friend Marjory (here on Listia) noted that there's a link below, which says "find a user." You can find me or anyone if you can type in the person's Listia name. Mine is my own name of course.

I would love to have some that's not carded yet - we have black and dark fawn alpacas, and I was going to play around with mixing this with the dark fawn.

You can spin it. Have some faith in yourself and try it out. The first stuff you spin will be thick & thin and might break off but from everyone that I have talked with, you will have a difficult time spinning that type of yarn again once you have had some practice. Good luck!

Wowza, I was going to hold out to the end to put in my bid but I guess I don't need to do that now. Out of my credit range! Glad that you are getting some good credits for this and I will be watching for more.

I am so sad! I think dropsi is going to beat me out on this. Maybe when/if you find more, you can let me know so that I can try again!

Keep watching! There's a "find a user" link at the bottom of the page. Don't be sad!

I really need to make a better drop spindle, mine is a CD on a dowel with a cup hook. Fine for twisting plarn and plying yarn that is too thin for a project, but hardly "decent"! I feel a need to know how to do everything, so this is a "next step" from my crochet...

I'm totally smitten with the look of this fiber!

The fiber is carded and ready to spin. You can use your homemade spindle. You should list some plarn here! I've always wanted to make some, but have too much going already! Good luck with the auction! :)

i've getting ready to learn how to card' just got the brushes. i've got 2 sheeo fleeses and several bags of alpaca fur/ plus some bison and wolf fur. I hope this works out as I'm trying to be self taught. there is a need for people who can do these skills to teach others how to do it...without it costing an arm and leg for lessons.

You have bison? Care for a swap? Contact me, if so..,.. I am completely self taught, though I did have an experienced spinner come and look at one or two of my old wheels... I ended up giving away a very old castle wheel, which I regret...another story.... You can learn quite a bit from good youtube vids...

love this, and the angora you have listed! I haven't tried spinning yet, but I'm acquiring things to spin, and have a drop spindle (and a not working spinning wheel, but no where to fix it). Fanned and watching! I wish there was a way to group people one fans, so I could put you in the 'watch this person for more!' group!

If you have a drop spindle, you're ready to spin, with these fibers. Angora doesn't have to be carded at all. Also, we should all put our listia names in the body of our texts when we list things, that way, a seller comes up in a search. I have my name as a tag in the body of the description.

Sorry for all the questions - did you happen to notice how long the staple was?

You can ask as many questions as you need or want to. I'm happy to answer. It's more toward the fawn color. Washing or setting the ply will probably lighten it some. It's definitely not cream colored, nor is it dark. As to the staple length, hmmm... since I put it in the carder already, not sure, but will go out to the studio and see if I have some left, and post the staple length if so. If you'd rather have some that is NOT carded, and I have it, I can do that for the winner, as well in the same weight. I have black and some gray, as well, not carded and not sure what else....

Is it cream, or more of a light fawn?

Bridgett: I dont' know if I can do the only handspun this year. I'm such a perfectionist that I really want to get better at spinning before I commit myself to only using my handspun. I know it is backwards thinking but I just need to practice some more. I might take it up half way through though.....that would give me some time to get better at it.

I know that it is hard for people to get handspun as opposed to mill spun. I still use a lot of mill spun but since I have a ton of wool to get made into yarn, I'm liking handspun more. I can't wait to experiment with dyeing the wool as well. Does alpaca take color as well as wool?
Feb 6th, 2012 at 6:03:17 PM PST by
Original
Sure you can dye it or enhance the color if it's not dark or even black. Handspun yarn is NOT the same as mill spun. It's a real joy to process and spin your own yarn. You'll look back on this yarn, try to make it this way again, and you won't be able to!! People call it art yarn.

don't be surprised - this is a test.... my rabbit hair yarn went for way less than I thought it would.
