Edouard Vuillard (French, 1868–1940) began his career as a member of the group of artists known as the Nabis (“The Prophets”), creating startling works that utilized unusual vantage points, vibrant color, and rich pattern and arabesque. Vuillard soon developed his own unique style that combined keen observation of the modern world with a sense of poetry and ambiguity to produce works of exceptional beauty and complexity. Best known for his depictions of daily life and domestic interiors populated by seamstresses, family, and friends, he explored a wide range of subjects—interiors, portraits, still lifes, and landscapes—in his easel paintings and in the magnificent decorations he produced to adorn the private homes of his most discerning patrons.
