prob needed credit card because they didnt have enough credits...you can buy credits with your credit card if you need more

To bid on gift cards, you have to either verify your credit card or your phone number. If your friend couldn't or didn't want to verify his phone number, then he would need a verified credit card to be able to bid. To verify your credit card, you get charged a small fee ($1). That's just to make sure it actually works.
