The term "silver certificate" doesn't mean that the $1 bill is silver, it means that you could have taken it to the bank at that time and would be given a silver dollar for it. There were also Gold Certificates that could be exchanged for Gold.
Both Silver Certificates and Gold Certificates have been demonized meaning that you can no longer take them to a bank and expect the silver or gold. They are however collectible in their own right...
@Bobtruecamel ... Silver Certificates were issued by the Federal Government. The types of bills that were issued by individual banks were called "National Currency" or "National Bank Notes" ... They weren't issued in $1 denominations as far as I know... only $5's and up. So this isn't that...
