Duane Martin stars as Derrick, a broke graduate student who finds work as a "seat filler" at an awards show. It's there he meets sexy superstar Jnelle (Destiny's Child's Kelly Rowland), with whom he has an instant connection--as long as she's under the mistaken impression that he's a high-powered executive, that is, a lie that Derrick struggles to maintain as he falls more and more in love with her.
